Road Trips

Macdermotts was born on the road, first on horseback and then in vehicles, we have thousands of miles under our belts and we continue to spend a lot of our time exploring the regions we work in. We are blessed with a myriad of landscapes, and one of the best ways to explore is behind the wheel, either with one of our local guides and drivers or we can equip you with the right vehicle, equipment and knowledge so you can explore on your own steam.

Destinations & Excursions

  • Up through the Yungas Cloud Forest and onto La Puna Plateau, of which the Atacama desert in Chile is part of.
  • Travelling along the winding roads of the Calchaqui and Humahuaca Valleys stopping off at the mountain villages as you go.
  • Connecting the Chilean vineyards of central Chile and those of Mendoza, West Argentina.
  • Travelling between the famous names of Southern Patagonia such as Torres del Paine, Calafate, Chalten and the Aysen region, or between the lake districts of Northern Patagonia.
  • The mega road trips of Route 40, that runs the length of Argentina or La Carretera Austral (The Great Southern Road), that runs the length of Chilean Patagonia.
  • Joining up the Ibera Wetlands and the Iguazu Waterfalls
  • Driving up the the coast of Buenos Aires and Uruguay, stopping off at little farms and wineries.

Travel logistics

  • Historically we’ve recommended going south in the Summer and north in the winter for road trips, though with the weather getting increasingly harder to predict this is no longer a hard and fast rule and much depends on the route you’d like to take.
  • We would advise and provide all the equipment necessary for each specific road trip.

Things to keep in mind

  • The state of the roads is a mixture, and a bumpy stony track can be fun for a few minutes though less fun after several hours. Let us know how far off the beaten track you’d like to go and we’ll organise the right vehicle and route for you.
  • In much of the country we have good mobile phone reception though, if necessary, we provide extra equipment, GPS, satellite phones etcetera when going to regions where it can be problematic.
