The Mocona waterfall from the air

The Mocona Waterfall is an oddity in the waterfall world. Where most waterfalls run perpendicular to a river Mocona runs parallel. This is due to a narrow underwater canyon running along the bottom of the Uruguay river. The falls may be a little cousin of Iguazu but at 2,000 meters wide they are a long way from little; their name in Guarani means ‘that which swallows everything’, which describes perfectly the feeling you have watching the huge amount of water rushing through the deep narrow channel.

The rain forest of the Yabotí biosphere

The falls are fantastic though the journey to get to them is as much of an attraction as the destination. The region where the falls lie (Southeast Misiones province, northeast Argentina) is known as the Yabotí biosphere. On both sides of the river there are national parks made up of thick unspoilt rainforest with an abundance of wildlife, including Tapir, Jaguar, Toucans and Harpy eagles.
